If you are a resident, you are required to file Form K 40. This states that you lived in the state of Kansas and all your income came from a source within Kansas as well. You are required to have the same filing status as your federal return and your Kansas filing as well. If you lived in Kansas but worked in a different state, you may be eligible to get a tax credit from Kansas so that you are not taxed on the same income twice. PART-YEAR RESIDENT:
This states that you had income from the state of Kansas. You have two choices on how to file your required Form K-40. You could file as a resident of Kansas or a part-time resident. Even if you file as a part-time resident, you will have the same filing requirements as a Kansas resident regarding how the state will tax your income.
NON-RESIDENT:
This states that you did not live in Kansas, but you had income from a source that was in the state of Kansas. You are required to file Schedule S, Part B.
