Form 2290 is an annual Federal tax return that helps pay taxes for the heavy vehicle, for the tax year. For heavy vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55000 pounds or more, the Internal Revenue Service requires the taxpayers to file Form 2290, by 31st August of every tax year.

Generally, the trucking businesses will operate their vehicles by July, during every tax period. The deadline to file the taxes is August 31st. For vehicles with FUM, other than July, and for newly purchased vehicles, the due date is the last day of the month, of the vehicle’s first use. For example, if November is the FUM of the vehicle, the due date to file its HVUT taxes is 31st December.
If the truck owners place an additional taxable truck on their name during any month, other than July, they should file HVUT tax Form 2290. The taxes will prorate for months, it was in service. Truck owners should file Form 2290 for these trucks, in the last month, following the month, the vehicle was on public highways.
What if you miss the due date for Form 2290?
If you do not file Form 2290 within the deadline, the truck owners have to pay penalties to the IRS. Failing to file tax returns within the deadline, attracts a penalty of 4.5% of the total tax amount due. The tax will increase every month for up to five months. If you miss making an HVUT payment, the penalty is 0.5% of the total tax amount due. It will also incur an additional interest of 0.54% every month.
