The Federal/ State E-file program lets the taxpayers file both the federal and the state tax returns together. For this, about thirty-seven states in the U.S. and the District of Columbia joined with the IRS to let the tax filers e-file their federal and state tax return at the same time.
How does this program work?
When the taxpayer uses the state or federal E-file, the e-filing software collects the data from the user and puts them in separate segments of federal and state returns. These separate segments, otherwise called pockets are transmitted to the IRS at the same time. The IRS once receives the data from the user for the state that participates in the program, retrieves and processes the state tax return.
How to File Federal/ State Tax Returns Together?
Tax filers can use the federal or state e-file system through the enrolled tax agent (Tax2efile) or CPA, which is accepted by the IRS as an authorized e-file service provider. The taxpayer cannot e-file this federal/ state tax return through the IRS online forms manually, without the enrolled agent. The tax filer can able to e-file only the federal tax return through the IRS online forms.
Which states allow both Federal and State E-filing?
To perform this federal/ state e-filing, the tax filer must know whether his/ her state participates in this tax return program. So, these are the following states that made the state filing system super convenient to the users. The residents of these states can submit the state tax along with the federal tax return to the IRS:
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin.
