AUGUST 31: IRS HVUT Form 2290 Duedate and Deadline

When you have purchased a new taxable heavyweight vehicle with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, as the owner or operator of the vehicle you are required to file the IRS 2290 Form by the last day of the following month. If you used the vehicle only at a certain period of the month or partly, the tax amount will be calculated for the vehicle used the month as a whole month.

For instance, if you started to use the vehicle in the middle of the month i.e. 15th of February, the tax amount will be calculated for the entire month of February, instead of 15 days time.

Form 2290 Due Date for 2018-2019 Filing

Usually, the tax amount is prorated depending upon the number of months of usage of the taxable vehicle on the public highways during the tax period. So when you used the vehicle during the month of January, you need to e-file the HVUT truck tax by the end of February. Then the tax will depend on the 6 months period instead of the full year. But for the vehicles that are first used in February, the tax will be calculated only for 5 months and so on.

IRS 2290 form should be filed by the owners of the taxable heavyweight vehicles by the last day of the month of first use (For more clarity refer to the below chart).
