IRS 2290 Form is the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) filed by truckers every year for using public highways with their heavyweight vehicles for the entire year. Every trucker who own heavyweight motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more and uses public highways for transportation has to file their IRS 2290 form annually. But, in the case of first used vehicles, the HVUT due is the last day of the month that is following the first used month.
Time to e-file your Form 2290 to the IRS
IRS 2290 form should be filed for the first used month of the taxable vehicle on the public highway for the current tax period. For the current year, the taxable period starts on 1st July 2018 and ends on 30th June 2019. And for the heavyweight vehicles, which are in use from the beginning of the tax period, the IRS tax filing deadline is 31st August.
You need to file the taxes for the entire tax period and the tax amount must be paid by the owners of the heavyweight vehicles. If the due date falls on Saturday, Sunday, or any legal holiday then you can file on the next office working day.
When you use more than one vehicle for more than a month, then you need to file separate Form 2290 for each month. Keep in mind that IRS 2290 form should be filed by the owners of the taxable heavyweight vehicles by the last day of the month of first use (For more clarity refer to the below chart).

What is new in this tax season?
- New payment option i.e. payment through credit or debit card: In this tax season IRS added a new payment option for taxpayers. Form 2290 tax filers will be now able to pay their taxes either through credit or debit card.
- Schedule 1: First used month. From 2018, the tax filers need to include the month of first use in Schedule 1 in order to specify when the vehicles are added in Schedule 1, which is used during the tax period.
- New filing address for certain tax returns due starting from 2019: From the start of 2019, there is a new filing address for the tax returns filed without a payment due or when you pay the tax through EFTPS or when you use a credit or debit card. Note that the new filing address is only for the return due on or after January 1, 2019.
