Heavy vehicle operators/Owners with a 55,000 lbs or more gross recipients to use public highways must e-file IRS Form 2290, the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT). As they use the public highway roads for their transportation and this tax amount would be used for the maintenance of the roads. Penalties for Not/Late Filing IRS HVUT Form 2290
The IRS, FHWA, State and local agents work together to spot and address HVUT evasions. When you fail to pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) by the given due date of August, the penalty is 4.5% of the total HVUT tax which is due and this assessed every month for up to 5 months. You must also face the additional monthly penalty, which is equal to 0.5% of the total tax due. Excluding these charges, there are additional interest charges that are applied as well.
For instance, if you owe $ 500 to the IRS and failed to file the tax amount for 5 months. Then, the penalty amount would mount to its maximum by summing all the penalties and interest. After the IRS calculations the penalties along with the tax amount, you owe comes up to $ 638.5, which is a huge amount when compared to the actual tax amount. In addition to the federal monetary penalties, registration of your vehicles will also be suspended when proof of HVUT payment is not provided. To say about the worst part, along with the fines, you need to face imprisonment in cases of guilt.
