If you have a motor vehicle that is registered with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more you are required to file Form 2290 which is a Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Return.
When is Form 2290 Dues?
For every month your vehicle is used on a public highway you must file 2290 form tax your vehicle. The deadline to file is not based on your vehicle registration date but begins July 1 of the current year and ends June 30 of the following year. You must file the form by the last day of the month following the month in which the vehicle was first used on a public highway. For example, if you first use your vehicle on June 15 you will need to file your form by July 31 of the following year.
HVUT Penalties For Late Filing
If you file any false returns you will receive penalties for doing so in addition to any interest that could be charged on top of your late payments. If you can prove that you have a good reason for not filing on time then your late fees may not be imposed. If you do receive a penalty for filing your return late and you think you have a good reason send a letter to IRS explaining why you believe you have a good enough reason for having to file late.

If you want your return processed faster then electronically filing your return is the best choice for you since you can get a stamped Schedule 1 almost immediately after you file your return and the IRS accepts it. You can file your form online through any electronic device that is a part of the IRS form 2290 filing program. If you plan on filing a return that is reporting 25 vehicles or more then you will be required to file electronically and you can make your payments using a credit card.
Filing electronically helps improve your return’s processing time and saves you resources like postage and a trip to the post office. It also reduces any processing errors that can occur due to human error. You can file it whenever you’re ready to at any time of day or night and you can print your receipt as soon as they accept it instead of having to wait for it to come in the mail. You can also file your return by mail by mailing your form along with a check or money order to the Internal Revenue Service. If you plan to use the electronic system to pay or you have no payment due but want to mail in your form then you will mail it to the Department of the Treasury.
Once you have paid off the payment on your return you will be required to submit proof along with your registration renewal to your state authorities. A stamped Schedule 1 can serve as proof as well as a receipt or a copy of your completed 2290 form with a copy of the check you used to make your payment.
